Pemberton lies in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester, in the North West region of England. Historically part of Lancashire, it became part of Greater Manchester in 1974 following local government reorganisation. Originally a township within the parish of Wigan, Pemberton expanded significantly during the 18th and 19th centuries as industrial activity intensified.
