Common Mistakes That Keep Your Back Pain Coming Back (And what to do instead)
If your back pain keeps returning, you’re not on your own.
Most people I see in the sports injury clinic aren’t struggling because their back is damaged. They’re struggling because nobody’s ever shown them what actually works long term.
Here are the mistakes I see most often.
Resting for too long
Rest has its place. But only briefly.
After an injury it’s normal to take it easy for a few days. Stay still for too long though and that’s where problems settle in.
- You become deconditioned
- Your back gets more sensitive
- Your confidence drops
Movement is what rebuilds trust in your body. That doesn’t mean pushing through pain. It means safe, controlled movement, early.
Chasing quick fixes
Everyone wants the easy answer.
- Massage
- Painkillers
- That one magic exercise
Back pain doesn’t work like that. It’s usually built up over time, so it takes a progressive approach to shift it.
What actually helps is education, gradual loading, and rebuilding strength so you trust your body again.
Hoping it will just go away
Sometimes it does. When it doesn’t, people wait.
Weeks turn into months. The problem gets harder to fix.
The bigger issue? You never work out what caused it in the first place. The same habits repeat. The cycle continues.
Back pain isn’t just about your back. It’s about your routine, your training, and the way you move day to day. Once that clicks, things start to change.
Leaving it too late to get assessed
This is one of the biggest ones.
People wait until:
- It’s really painful
- It’s stopping them sleeping or training
- It’s affecting daily life
The earlier you understand what’s going on, the easier it is to fix.
An assessment isn’t just about treatment. It’s about clarity. It shows you what’s safe and gives you a plan that actually works.
Not dealing with it at all
Sounds obvious. Still common.
People work around the pain, avoid certain movements, and hope it settles.
Back pain rarely disappears on its own without the right approach. What works is a proper plan, consistent effort, and better habits. Most of all, feeling confident in your body again.
The takeaway
Back pain isn’t something you need to just live with.
In most cases it’s very manageable when you understand the cause, keep moving properly, build strength gradually, and sort it early rather than late.
If your back pain keeps coming and going, or you’re not sure what to do next, get in touch or book an assessment.
We’ll work out what’s driving it and put a clear plan in place to get you moving properly again.
